Our Goal
Demand for PET scans is rising, but Ontario’s current approach is unprepared to meet the future needs of Ontario patients.
The More PETs Coalition towards the shared goal of ensuring that nuclear medicine delivery, including PET scans, is modernized so that Ontario patients can get faster diagnoses, better outcomes and the right care at the right time.
Our goal is twofold:
Educate referring physicians on the process of ordering PET scans (see: Resources for Doctors) and empower eligible patient groups to advocate for one (see: Resources for Patients).
Advocate for a comprehensive, expert-driven nuclear medicine strategy to ensure that Ontario’s nuclear medicine and PET delivery can provide Ontario patients with reliable access to cutting-edge treatments.
PET is not experimental, it’s essential.
PET and SPECT scans are the most accurate and effective tools available for diagnosing and/or staging these serious, and often life-threatening, diseases. They empower doctors specialized in these conditions to make informed decisions about the most effective treatments for critically ill patients. PET scans can precisely stage and detect occurrences and recurrences at an early stage, giving patients the best chance for recovery or remission.
Despite major investments in PET scanners, Ontario has one of the lowest utilizations rates per capita in Canada and is far behind fellow OECD countries. The More PETs Coalition is committed to working with the Ontario Government and the full range of sector experts, doctors and patients to make sure that Ontario has a modern approach to nuclear medicine delivery that anticipates and meets the current and future needs of Ontario patients.
