Our Goal
Demand for PET scans is rising, but Ontario’s current approach is unprepared to meet the future needs of Ontario patients.
The More PETs Coalition is working to modernize Ontario’s approach to PET/Nuclear Medicine delivery to ensure that Ontario patients can get faster diagnoses, better outcomes and the right care at the right time.
Our goal is twofold:
Educate referring physicians on the process of ordering PET scans (see: Resources for Doctors) and empower eligible patient groups to advocate for one (see: Resources for Patients).
Advocate for a comprehensive, expert-driven nuclear medicine strategy to ensure that Ontario’s nuclear medicine and PET delivery can provide Ontario patients with reliable access to cutting-edge treatments.
PET is not experimental, it’s essential.
PET and SPECT scans are the most accurate and effective tools available for diagnosing and/or staging these serious, and often life-threatening, diseases. They empower doctors specialized in these conditions to make informed decisions about the most effective treatments for critically ill patients. PET scans can precisely stage and detect occurrences and recurrences at an early stage, giving patients the best chance for recovery or remission.
As part of Ontario Health, Cancer Care Ontario maintains a list of indications for which PET scans may easily be ordered - these indications are supported by rigorous evaluation that has demonstrated impact on patient management.
Doctors know their patients best. Highly trained, experienced cancer, cardiac and neurology specialists are in the best position to determine what type of medical imaging will empower them to provide the care their patients need. The More PETs Coalition is working to put this important decision making where it should belong - in the capable hands of experienced doctors and specialists.
This will help reduce wait times and support better patient outcomes by ensuring that more patients can access this potentially life-saving technology and get the treatment they need, when they need it.
