The Solution

The Ontario Government is taking important steps to harness its world-class nuclear energy advantage to become a global leader in the production of medical isotopes, nuclear medicine innovation and to support advanced, life-saving cancer treatments for Ontario patients.

However, PET demand is on the rise. Emerging trends, including the approval of ground-breaking new therapies for prostate cancer, the transition of cardiac and bone scans to PET, and rapid advances in the potential of nuclear medicine to treat life-threatening diseases will significantly drive demand for PET scans in Ontario.

To realize its nuclear innovation and economic growth goals and ensure that Ontarians see the benefits in front-line patient care, Ontario needs a modern approach to nuclear medicine and PET scan delivery.

This approach will serve to address the barriers currently standing in the way of greater PET-scan utilization – such as:

  • Outdated and underfunded PET infrastructure that lacks the capability to support cutting-edge diagnostics and treatment

  • Low rates of PET scan utilization due to operating and administrative barriers

  • Critical gaps in health human resources and regional access disparities

The More PETs Coalition is committed to working with the Ontario Government and the full range of sector experts, doctors and patients to make sure that Ontario has a modern approach to nuclear medicine delivery that anticipates and meets the current and future needs of Ontario patients.
